You and I are clearly on the same page that salespeople in our industry can’t just talk products and performance — there needs to be something more or the corner office guy won’t take the time to meet with the wholesaler or wealth advisor. We have had one month of positive net flows in the last 36 months — we need to move the needle away from selling products/performance, to building enduring relationships, to then somehow connecting these enduring relationships to sales of our products.
After leaving you last night, I came to the conclusion that you are 100% right — it is hard to establish brand equity with just differentiated research, better asset allocation tools, etc,. The most effective approach has to be combining “selling” analytical tools that allow FCs to be smarter, and something more subtle that changes FCs’ lives or makes them better business people. With both, the relationship will, in fact, be more enduring than what one gets just with a research/tools soft sale. Then the product pitch can come, and is more likely to pay dividends, since the personal relationship will be firmer and more credible.
As an analyst, I am, of course, too linear in how all this works because I do believe there is a big opportunity here.

I wanted to give you some feedback on the Team Training program in general and Paul Blease’s visit to my office in particular. Let me address the actual program first because it will be the easiest. It was, by far, the best training program I have seen put on by NY…period!
Paul visited my branch to work with specific teams. He met with two of my advisors who have been contemplating forming a team for over one year
In short order, Paul was able to identify the specific issues that they needed to address and gave them specific action steps to get them off the mark and onto the next step. He next met with their team and was able to help them in identifying roles for each team member and gave a basic layout of how the business would look. Because of Paul’s work, both advisors have scheduled time with me for next week to move this to the next level. I believe this business could be enormous (think in excess of $4-5 million) within three years!

Paul met with my #2 producer who was dealing with growth of business issues as well as a dysfunctional team environment. Paul spent time going through the psychology of why he was having problems growing the business and gave him very concrete ideas to work through that would help him. He next met with the team and identified the reason for the disjunction and animosity between members. he was relieved that he was able to get his arms around the problem, not that it is solved, but he at least knows that the roles of his team members needs to change and is working towards that end.

Do you ever record these seminars? I think it would be very helpful to have a tape of it that I could listen to once in a while during my 45 minute commute each way everyday. There was so much information and great ideas that it wouldn’t be possible to remember all of them. If I could hear them over and over, they would tend to stick more in my brain.
It’s like when you see a movie for the second time….you usually pick up a line or a joke that you didn’t catch the first time. The personality evaluation questionnaires were great! I’ll admit when I was completing it that I thought it was dumb because I felt a lot of the questions didn’t even apply to me, but when I read the results, it pretty much nailed my personality and how I act and react.
